Enjoy a unique experience that's simply not possible by just watching on TV! Come face to face with Japanese culture that has been kept alive through many years, such as the presence of a referee which began in the Sengoku period (about 1467-1603), and the use of vivid 'kesho-mawashi' ceremonial aprons and the ring entering procession which have continued from the Edo period (1603-1868), on this tour guided by a National Government Licensed English Guide Interpreter knowledgeable about sumo wrestling. Watch sumo, Japan's national sport, from comfortable 2nd Floor chair seats. All tour participants will receive "The Sumo," a booklet about sumo (in English); and Banzuke-hyo, a table of rankings, as a gift! It has easy-to-understand explanations about the origins of sumo wrestling, match rules, reading the banzuke list, enjoying the ceremony, and more, so feel free to use it during the sumo viewing.

We met at a hotel nearby and did an hour-long introduction to sumo, its traditions, and the lifestyles of rikishi (sumo wrestlers), before heading to the Ryogoku Kokugikan for the actual match. From there, we had a lot of free time! Our guide, Jori-san, sat near us so if we had any questions about what was happening she could answer them. She also gave us updates on what the drama was with the current rishiki and the yokozuna, so we could choose who we wanted to root for! It was really fun and a great cultural experience as well. The crowd was electric during the longer, more exciting matches, with the whole stadium erupting in thunderous cheers. Also, if you want to try chanko nabe, there’s a lot you can have on the basement floor.

Miki san was an incredible tour guide! Her informative introduction set the tone for the rest of the day. Within the first few minutes of her speaking, it was evident how genuine and passionate she is about Sumo. During the tournament, Miki provided insightful commentary and was quick to translate announcements to our group. The crowd’s energy was contagious and fun; I even found myself cheering for my chosen wrestlers along with others! can honestly say that this tour was one of the highlights of our Japan trip. This is a must do if you’re interested in Sumo- a unique experience and a wonderful tour guide wrapped into one. Thank you!!

Such a brilliant tour. We did not know what to expect, but we loved it. The organisation was great and our tour guide, Halle, knew so much about the sport, the wrestlers and was obviously a massive fan! Thank you for making it all such a great, personalised experience. We could not have enjoyed it more!

Our guide, Michiko, made the sumo experience fun and educational because of her expertise and passion for the sport. She is a great guide who imparted her knowledge with humor and humility. The actual competition was awesome. Seeing these athletes compete with raw power, strength and strategy was incredible.
