If you’re a fan of wine and flavorful brandy, then you’ll instantly fall in love with Albania. Located along the Mediterranean Sea, Albania is the ideal location to grow the perfect grapes that produce some of the best drinks in the region Winemaking is an ancient tradition in Albania, dating all the way back to the Bronze Age. Fast forward to the years of communist dictatorship, wineries thrived but could only be controlled by the state. Now many wineries are family-owned and produce the country’s wines, whiskeys, and the national Albanian drink – raki. Along a beautiful, blue-green lake only about 50 minutes from Durres and an hour away from Tirana. The grapes grown on their massive vineyard produce three types of wines: merlot, tempranillo, and cabernet sauvignon.

Our winery guide walked us through the winemaking process, including a tour of the cellars and a bit of history about Albanian wine culture. Tried 6 different local wines together with the food. Totally worth the money. Cheers to tour gide Mario!

The driver picked us up from Tirana, but we waited for almost an hour because he blamed the traffic jam. I believe better planning could have avoided this delay. During the trip, he only talked about himself and his favorite cars instead of discussing the country and its history—or he could have simply been quiet. While driving, he constantly checked his phone and watched YouTube for music, which was very dangerous. Then, at the winery, he introduced us to an unprofessional guide who spoke for barely 10 minutes about the winery's history and production process. I expected more: a demonstration of wine tasting, how to appreciate different wine aromas, and information about various types of wine glasses. Afterward, we had a tour of the lake, which was okay. The lunch provided was too light; we returned hungry since it was supposed to serve four people but had to be shared among us.

Difficult to assess the content of the tour from the review, but contained more than described. Been picked up at the hotel, got Rakie in the car, then stopped for ice cream and local light lunch. Upon arrival the vineyard we could first wander a little for ourselves, was then told simply about the farm. Then followed a simple tour of the production premises. Then followed a simple boat trip on an artificial lake where we got two glasses of rosé wine. Then followed the wine tasting where we got four wines and a rakie with local cuisine. Unfortunately, the food was not paired with the wine. We were then driven back to the hotel. All in all great trip and good service. Had top score if the wine and food were put together according to what the wines fit to.
