Jianlou
Jianlou , also known as the Arrow Tower, is a prominent historical structure located at the southern end of Tiananmen Square in Beijing, just inside Zhengyangmen (Qianmen) Gate. Built during the Ming Dynasty in the early 15th century, Jianlou was an essential part of Beijing’s ancient city defense system. The tower was originally used as a military watchtower and had openings for archers—hence the name "Arrow Tower." Together with the gate tower of Zhengyangmen, it once formed a formidable inner defense for the imperial city, guarding the southern entrance of the old capital. Architecturally, Jianlou is a striking example of traditional Chinese fortress design, featuring thick grey brick walls, a massive base, and a grand wooden superstructure topped with green-glazed tile roofs. Today, though no longer used for defense, it stands as a symbol of Beijing’s historical legacy and a striking contrast to the modern buildings around Tiananmen Square.

Tony was a brilliant guide who made it all feel easy! We were a little nervous to leave the airport during a layover for the first time but we felt at ease as soon as we were met at the airport. Really appreciated the communication leading up to the tour as well. We got to see a few key sights, enjoy some walks soaking up the atmosphere, learn about life in China from our engaging host, and try some delicious street food - perfect for a taste of the city in the short time we had, and back to the airport in plenty time. Thanks Tony!
