Acropolis
The Acropolis of Athens, a symbol of ancient Greek civilization, has stood for millennia as a testament to art, philosophy, and democracy. Its most famous structure, the Parthenon, was built in the 5th century BCE during the Golden Age of Pericles, dedicated to the goddess Athena. Earlier, the site had been used for Mycenaean palaces and temples. Over time, the Acropolis witnessed numerous transformations: it became a Roman temple, a Byzantine church, a Frankish palace, and an Ottoman mosque. Despite damage from wars, earthquakes, and looting—most notably the removal of sculptures by Lord Elgin in the 19th century—it remains a UNESCO World Heritage site and a powerful symbol of Western heritage. Today, the Acropolis continues to inspire millions, representing the enduring legacy of ancient Athens and its contributions to democracy, philosophy, and the arts.
Acropolis Museum
The Acropolis Museum, opened in 2009, is a modern architectural masterpiece located at the foot of the Acropolis in Athens. Designed by Bernard Tschumi, it houses over 4,000 artifacts from the Acropolis, spanning from the Greek Bronze Age to Roman and Byzantine times. Its layout follows the natural topography and history of the Acropolis itself. Highlights include the Caryatids of the Erechtheion, parts of the Parthenon frieze, and the original statues from the Temple of Athena Nike. A glass floor reveals an ancient Athenian neighborhood beneath the museum. The top floor, known as the Parthenon Gallery, aligns with the temple above, offering stunning views and a contextual display of the Parthenon’s sculptural decoration. The museum blends history, innovation, and light, providing an immersive experience that connects visitors to the ancient world while advocating for the reunification of the Parthenon marbles still held in the British Museum.

Was amazing! Ilias was simply wonderful attentive and not overbearing! We enjoy traveling on our own. We don’t want somebody following us around or telling us a lot of detail- Perfect for what we needed. He was always on time and a great communicator.!

We were off a cruise ship and only had a limited time in Athens. Our day was PERFECT. Ilias, was a gracious host and wonderful Greek Ambassador. He allowed us to create the itinerary that fit our needs. Our first stop was the Temple of Olympian Zeus. Next we headed to the Acropolis Museum which was amazing! One person in our party wanted to climb the Acropolis and did so, while the rest of us enjoyed the museum. We then headed to the first Olympic Stadium. Next was the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, then to a panoramic view of Athens from Mt. Lycabettus. We finished with a stop at Monastiraki Square, for shopping and snacks. We packed a lot into 6 hours. Ilias was terrific and I highly recommend him as a guide.

He shows you places unknown by the tourists and gives you precious comments on the restaurants he would recommend. Tour with Ilias is always a certainty of good and happy moments!

His price quotes are reliable. He is extremely knowledgeable and every journey is an opportunity for wise and insightful discussion. By the way, he is also a safe driver! Very reassuring in and around Athens.
