Easy meet-up at Naples port, short drive to Herculaneum. Decent amount of time to explore, then on to Vesuvius. Managed to reach the crater in 40 mins with a few stops on the way, not as difficult a climb as it looks. Stopped at a nearby souvenir shop, nice people, reasonable prices, no hard sell. On to Pompeii, an absolute must-see. Site too big to cover in anything less than a day, but well worth visiting even for just a few hours. Check out beforehand what particularly interests you to make the most of your time there. All in all a fabulously memorable day's sightseeing, well worth the cost but this was a 'shoulder' season, I would hesitate to recommend it at peak holiday times due to the inevitable crowds.

This whole trip was like a cab ride. No interactions and zero commentary by guide/driver. His name was Ceasar. Hardly any time for Pompeii. All they do is give an hour.

The Herculaneum visit was good, thanks to the guide, whom we paid separately. The visit to Pompeii DID NOT OCCUR: we were taken to the site, just at 15:30, when the ticket office was closing. We were not able to purchase the entry fee. We did complain about it to the driver, but he feigned ignorance. We asked whether he could provide us with a complimentary lift to the site the following day, but he would only commit to informing his office on the issue. Overall, the excursion was not good value for money.

Luca was our driver for our day at Herculaneum, Vesuvius and Pompeii. He was really good company and an excellent driver/guide/advisor. He arrived early at 8.15 (was for 8.30) and on time at each stop and did not pressure us at any point. Amazingly we were the only people on the tour. He dropped us at Herculaneum at about 8.30. It was empty and we had 2 hours to stroll around looking at everything. Just about right. Luca picked us up at 10.30 and drove us smoothly up Vesuvius on winding roads dropping us at 11. We then walked up the last kilometre or so. There is a gravel/lava path but be aware it is hard work to get to the top. We got to the top after about 40 minutes with several stops on the way. Amazing seeing the crater and puffs of smoke and the air is so fresh. The view over the bay is fantastic as well. We had 20 minutes walking round the top of the crater then 30 minutes down to meet Luca at 12.30. We got to Pompeii at 1 and had 2 and a half hours for lunch and investigating Pompeii. Quite short but since it is a long day it is actually ok. Maybe an extra half hour would be good. We had a nice sandwich at the café at the gate. Very good. We then paid at the gate and went to investigate Pompeii. It is massive. We paid for the extra 4 euros for Villa dei Misteri entry which is a long walk to the back of Pompeii but worth it as the frescos on the wall are the best we saw. We then walked through various houses and roads to the other end where the amphitheatre is that Pink Floyd played. Pompeii is so much bigger than Herculaneum so hard work and not so intimate but still amazing to see. For us after a long day we had had enough walking and were happy to see Luca at 3.30 for a quick drive back to Naples. If you want to see Pompeii in detail then book a full day tour but if you are short of time and want to see all 3 places then this is the trip for you. As described there is no guide included at each place although there were freelance guides offering at Herculaneum and Pompeii. Fantastic and very hard day. Many thanks to our driver/guide Luca.

Loved being able to wander around on our own. Didn't want a big group experience. Enjoyed Polly the tour guide and Alfredo the driver kept us safe.
