After the Noto earthquake, many of my grandfather’s beautiful Kutani ware pieces—vases, tea cups, and plates—were broken. I couldn’t throw them away because they held so many memories. Instead, I decided to give them a new life by transforming the fragments into unique accessories.
As a former instructor of gold leaf art in Kanazawa, I’ve spent years working with gold, and its delicate beauty inspired this workshop. I hope you’ll enjoy the same sense of creativity and tradition.
During the experience, you’ll also savor Ishikawa’s famous Kaga-bōcha tea, served on a 100-year-old Wajima lacquer tray, along with Kutani ware teacups that survived the quake. It’s a moment of history, craftsmanship, and hospitality—all in one experience.

We had a really nice workshop. We were with a small group of 6 people in total. We were picked up from the station and we enjoyed nice tea and chocolates while waiting for our work to dry. It is a nice and personal workshop given in English. We felt very welcome.

This is a unique and special experience as you will leave with a piece of jewellery that is from Hana's grandfathers collection that was destroyed in an earthquake. It gives added meaning to a beautiful craft and a memento that is so much more. Hana was a gracious hostess and gave excellent instructions ensuring we all left with a beautiful piece we could cherish, men and women alike! Highly recommend.

This was an absolutely lovely experience learning kintsugi with Hana. Hana picked us up and dropped us back to our hotel, nothing could be easier. She is such a patient and kind teacher and I made a brooch that I will always associate with wonderful memories of Kanazawa. It is a tragedy that an earthquake broke so much of her family pottery but we learned about the philosophy of kintsugi, doing it can help to mend things and souls. It was a really special experience.

Hana picked us at the train station. She had provided instructions to pick up point. She drove us to her home (workshop is at her home). Hana was very patient and explained the concept and process of kintsugi. There were many material (ceramics to glass beads) that we can choose. She provided samples and gave us plenty of time to choose our materials. There was no rush at all. We then glued the pieces, applied a special type of lacquer glue, dusted the pieces with gold powder, and touched up the pieces. Hana was very patient to guide us. Suggestion: choose darker pieces of ceramics. The gold comes out stronger. Suggestion: avoid putting the lacquer glue on the glass beads. The gold dust will cover up the colours of the beads. Hana packed our pieces in individual boxes with instructions to let the pieces dry out for two days in the boxes. The tea and biscuits were delicious. Biscuits were served on 140-year old lacquered plates. It was very nice of Hana to send us to Kanazawa Castle after the workshop. If you are in Kanazawa, do go for this 2-hour workshop. Go for experience.

We had so much fun! We were given lots of options and inspiration, shown the history of kintsugi in the area and Hana was a fantastic host. Her English is great and she even dropped us back off at the train station - very kind of her! Definitely book this experience!

Hana was generous and shared the information in a easy to follow manner. We really enjoyed the experience, and felt we learnt about the art of kintsugi in a practical and professional way. Hana welcomed us to her classroom and shared knowledge freely. She was hospitable and gave us a lovely morning tea, then took us to our next destination. We would recommend this experience.

We absolutely loved our session with Ohana. She was a great teacher and was very welcoming. It was a real experience doing it inside her home, and this was topped off by having wonderful local Kaga tea and sweets in her tatami room afterwards. Unlike some of the other sessions we considered, it was great being able to take home the pieces we made (as the drying time is much quicker than pottery, which takes several weeks). Would fully recommend.
