My daughter and I found the whole tour a pleasure, and the history fascinating. The audio and order of the tour from room to room was perfect.

I was not able to print the tickets. This situation had happened for all my reservations at the sites. The tickets costs had posted to my credit account. Although I had received email regarding my reservations, the emails showed that I had no reservations. Please check your booking ticketing system. This had caused me great stress at the site entrance.

The ticket includes the Holyrood Palace and Abby and the garden!!! Led by media guide, the tour starts from outside to inside!!! Th inside part is non-camera allowed!!! Onto the great staircase, then room after room decorated by fine tapestries and paintings which are preserved by dark vailed windows to the core (chamber) of the ruling monarchs; and, next, the great portrait gallery, the lobby…… Then, the most exciting part is the ones up-spiral-staircases—Queen Mary’s bed chamber and outer chamber—the crime scene with blood splattered floor!!! Then, the Abby next stretched to the Palace!!! Only half of the structure remained!!! And the garden being alive by maintenance and natural lives and constant events!!!

Through a gate you enter the courtyard, which looks almost exactly the same after Charles II had it remodelled in 1670. On a beautiful fountain there are figures who play music, go hunting, etc. The tower on the left is the oldest part of the palace from 1528, formerly with a drawbridge to the house. With an audio guide, we take the “processional route” that leads through the king’s magnificent chambers: King. Dining room, throne room, audience room, cabinet room, king's anteroom, sleeping quarters up to the chambers of Mary Stuart. In a well-kept park, only half of the abbey ruins “Holyrood-Abbey”, founded in 1128, remain. The remains of the foundations of the other half of the Abbey are still visible on lawns next to it. The palace is used for receptions, celebrations and state receptions. An interesting visit - a highlight in Edinburgh. In the shop of the palace there is an illustrated book about the palace, garden and Abbey in different languages. (The Scottish Parliament in a modern building is located directly opposite the palace)

  • Holyrood Palace tour 2025 review

Holyrood Palace tour was interesting and enjoyable, giving a good overview of the lifestyle and activities of the royals including some of that good old timey murder and mayhem history buffs like. Listening to the audio in the various rooms was quite informative. 90 minutes for a relaxing stroll through the exhibit rooms. If you bought a Viator ticket you must go to ticket booth to get it exchanged for another voucher so don’t waste time going directly to entry gate.

This was our favourite place while visiting Edinburgh. It is so well organised and informative. The audio visual guide is the best I have experienced anywhere, including contributions from members of the Royal Family. The Palace is stunning and so interesting. The uniformed staff were helpful and extremely well informed. I heard one lady, just standing in one of the rooms, give a full on history lesson to a visitor. The gardens are beautiful and the coffee shop is expensive but good. Highly recommend for a visit.
