Old Man of Storr – Isle of Skye’s Most Iconic Landmark Discover one of Scotland’s most photographed and instantly recognisable landscapes on this unforgettable visit to the Old Man of Storr. Towering pinnacles of ancient rock rise dramatically from the rugged Trotternish Ridge, creating a scene straight out of a fantasy film. Whether bathed in golden morning light, shrouded in mist, or dusted with snow, the Old Man of Storr offers spectacular photo opportunities at every turn. Standing beneath its towering spire, you’ll understand why it has captivated travellers, artists, and filmmakers for generations. Kilt Rock
Kilt Rock & Mealt Falls Perched high above the Sound of Raasay, Kilt Rock is one of the Isle of Skye’s most striking coastal features. Its towering cliffs are made up of vertical basalt columns and horizontal bands of sandstone, creating a pattern that resembles the pleats of a Scottish kilt — a breathtaking tribute to the island’s heritage carved by nature itself. From the viewing platform, you’ll also witness the spectacular Mealt Falls, a sheer cascade that plunges 60 metres directly into the sea below. Picture this: young marriage arrives at Portree, Isle of Skye, all the way from Mexico, with high hopes of exploring the island and all of its natural wonders. They pre-book a visit to the distillery and just hope to figure how to move around the island, thinking of perhaps hiring a car. Come day one: the only car hire available is closed; they try then to book a bus to take them to the distillery at Carbost the next day, but the next day will be Sunday, buses don't work Sundays. Besides, without a proper car, visiting some of the top landmarks is complicated, more so on a tight schedule. Seems they will end up just soaking in the beautiful view of Portree's port and hiking some nearby trails. Enter Explore Sky and Joanna. Not only she offers to drive them down to Carbost, but plans a day's worth of hiking and sightseeing, while negotiating a deal that worked well for her and for them. Me and my wife, we're the young marriage, and Joanna was our lifesaver. She met us at the port in Portree and planned a beautiful, deeply personalised tour: from driving us down to the distillery, to hiking along the Fairy Pools, Glenn Brittle Beach, the Old Man of Storr, all while driving through powerful scenic routes with breathtaking sights of the Cuillin mountains. Joanna is deeply kind and very knowledgeable, her pride of living here and wanting to share the experience of Skye with others is contagious! She talked to us about the history, geography and Gaelic-rooted traditions of the island; she gave us freedom and plenty of time to explore the different trails, and was always aware of our needs. When on a short hike or during a private visit, she was always in touch with us, and was always available for anything we might have needed. During our drives, she was a pleasure to talk to: brilliant, human and really funny! Having the opportunity to explore the island —or part of it— with the guidance of a local is a priceless treasure. We felt most welcome. Our visit, being in February, was a bit halted by the short span of daylight and by the unpredictability of the weather but, at the end, that's perhaps also a bit of experiencing Skye: the Elements shape everything. We would definitely recommend booking a tour with Explore Skye, and would book again an experience with Joanna in a heartbeat.

We had an incredible 3-day trip in Skye. It was very beautiful! Our guide, Joanna, was absolutely loevely - very friendly, and easy to talk to. The tour was very personalised and flexible. Joanna was always happy to stop at photo opportunities and showed us quieter spots that weren't on the map. Overall, it was a fantastic way to experience Skye, and Joanna made the whole trip more convenient. Highly recommend this tour if you want a relaxed, personalised experience with your family.

I did a bespoke 4 day tour with Dave of Explore Skye in September. He lives up to his company name of “Explore Skye” as he showed me every bit of Skye I wanted to explore (which was everything), plus other things you would not have thought to see, in the way I wanted to see it. I would not have had the amazing, mind blowing trip I had in Skye without Dave! Unlike other Skye tours with private drivers with relatively set itineraries, Dave truly listens to what you want and makes it happen. He communicates right away. As a result, he solved my transportation need from a manor house miles outside of Inverness to Skye (which many will not do), took me to non-mainstream places enroute to Skye such as a waterfall where we got to see salmon jumping and accessing Skye from this super cool hand cranked ferry where dolphins rode along beside us, and which dropped us off at a magical super scenic back country road. He also took me from Skye to Inverness Airport (again, something many will not do) via a different route so I was able to continue sight-seeing all the way to the airport! Dave worked out an itinerary that allowed me to spend as much time as I wanted or needed at the key Skye landmarks as well as attending some atypical activities. It was so easy: I just told him what I wanted to do and he worked it out so it would all happen! He also took me to some places most people don’t know about, such as an old Pict settlement that really tied in island life in the recent past to the current, and places where island wildlife can be seen (again, many tours don’t do this!). And did I mention that he knows where to get the best coffee in these cutest out of the way places? What also makes Dave even more unique is that as a solo traveler, he was willing to hike with me, a blessing since he provided information and pointed out things I would not have noticed, or guidebooks would not have noted, as well as motivation to get up those hills! As importantly, Dave is a great photographer himself, and pointed out great angles to take photos. Even more important, he is patient about all this! So if you are a hiker or photographer of any level, he’s who you should tour with! Dave and his company allow you to have a real adventure and to really “explore Skye”! I can’t wait to return!

David picked us up at our hotel and showed us all around Isle of Skye. He was very knowledgeable. The weather was not great, but we managed to hike the fairy pools and he accompanied us and took pics for us. We all enjoyed his tour, and would highly recommend him to anyone wanting a private tour.

We had an absolutely incredible experience touring Northern Skye with Dave as our guide! He was so accommodating — picked us up right from our stay and treated us to a full day exploring some of the island’s most breathtaking spots. Without him, we would have had to face the challenge of driving those winding roads ourselves! Our adventure included hiking across Skye’s legendary Trotternish Peninsula, climbing the Old Man of Storr and hearing the story of how a fairy’s spell turned an old man and his wife to stone so they could be together forever. 💕 We also stopped at the dramatic Kilt Rock cliffs, hiked down to Lealt Falls, and explored the surreal terrain of the Quiraing and the wonderfully windy Fairy Glen! If you’re visiting Skye, don’t miss a tour with Dave — his local knowledge, flexibility, and love of Skye truly made our trip unforgettable!

Me and my girlfriend had a great time checking out the local sites with David. He was very knowledgeable and up for a laugh. We also stayed at their Airbnb (The beach house) in the cabin outside which was very lovely and had spectacular views, also a sauna and a hot tub! We would definitely recommend this tour and if you’re looking for somewhere to stay the Airbnb is spot on too. 10/10

David was an amazing guide and was incredibly accommodating. He was able to provide a great itinerary but also provide suggestions on spots and things to do impromptu as the tour went on. I would highly recommend him as a true professional and ability to guide your group based on their interests

The time we spent exploring the Isle of Skye with David was absolutely unforgettable! We did a 2 day tour, experiencing the magic of both North and South Skye. David shared his love of the Isle, showing us stunning views and special hidden spots. His passion for the island made every moment special. We felt like we were touring with a friend instead of a tour guide we had just met. We enjoyed every stop at our leisure, never feeling rushed. David drove us all over the Isle sharing interesting information along the way. Be sure to prepare for the changing weather. We had sun, mist and a bit of heavy rain, It all added to the experience. If you find yourself in the Isle of Skye, I highly recommend you book tours with David and experience the magic. He will provide the perfect tour for you!

We had an incredible experience with David on the Isle of Skye. He was friendly, knowledgeable, and so easy to work with as we customized our tour. He knew all the best spots for sightseeing and guided us on some beautiful hikes we never would’ve found on our own. Having a driver was truly the best way to see the island—it made the whole experience relaxing and unforgettable. Highly recommend to anyone visiting Skye!
