Iera Odos
Nestled within the modern cityscape, this archaeological site reveals a fascinating fragment of the Sacred Way (Iera Odos), the ancient road that connected Athens to the sanctuary of Eleusis. Just beyond the city’s ancient walls, the Kifisos River marked a crucial crossing point, where an arched stone bridge once stood. Discovered during the construction of the Eleonas Metro Station, the remnants of the bridge include three surviving piers, indicating a structure with at least five arches. This historical crossing not only served as a vital link for trade and travel but also played a significant role in the Eleusinian processions, as thousands of pilgrims passed here on their sacred journey. Today, the site stands as a testament to the engineering and spiritual significance of ancient Greece, offering a rare opportunity to witness a part of the legendary route that once echoed with the footsteps of worshippers and philosophers alike.
The Ancient Sacred Way (Iera Odos) in Aigaleo is one of the most historically significant routes of antiquity, connecting Athens to the sacred city of Eleusis. This ancient road was the path taken by pilgrims during the Eleusinian Mysteries, one of the most revered religious festivals of the ancient world. As you walk along the remnants of the Sacred Way, you’ll traverse the same path where ancient Athenians carried sacred objects, sang hymns, and celebrated the goddess Demeter and her daughter Persephone. The road passes through the Aigaleo area, offering views of the landscape once associated with myth and ritual. Discover the history and significance of this sacred route, where every step resonates with stories of devotion, mystery, and celebration. Experience the connection between Athens and Eleusis, and immerse yourself in the journey that symbolized renewal, hope, and the cycle of life.

We took the Eleuisinian mysteries tour with Demetrios - he was very kind and made many stops along the way to Eleuisus to give us a sense of the entire journey of the initiate. We did not feel rushed and he prepared us with the information we needed to enjoy the final stop at the Telesterion and the temple of Demeter.
