3.00Though we thought our guide very pleasant we didn’t feel he really knew the history of the city in fact even though we are English we probably knew more ourselves. It was very tiring as we walked a great deal (I did 17000 steps) but didn’t think we learned much. No history was offered about the Chateau Frontenac where we were staying was disappointing. I think perhaps our guide wasn’t an experienced guide

5.00There is a lot more to see in Quebec City than I realized, and there are plenty of tours that are designed for you to see the Old City, Grosse-Ile, the Plains of Abraham, etc. And around Quebec we saw Montmorency and Ile d'Orleans. But when you have a car and arrange a private tour, you get to see some things that most tourists don't have the opportunity to see, and with commentary that reflects your interests. We connected with Madeleine by Whatsapp and met her at our hotel. We then traveled out to Wendake, the first nation's town, hotel, and recreated long house. The nature walk alone was worth the trip. We then traveled to a real functioning sugar shack, where we saw 5000 maple trees all connected to hoses that flowed into an enormous tank. The whole point of a private tour is you get to choose what to do. We could have -- maybe should have -- just done the Old City, but we had already done a group tour, the on-off bus, and our own meanderings. My recommendation -- start with the private tour.
