The Laurel forest, also called laurisilva or laurissilva, is a type of subtropical forest found in areas with high humidity and relatively stable, mild temperatures. The forest is characterized by broadleaf tree species with evergreen, glossy and elongated leaves, known as "laurophyll" or "lauroid". Plants from the laurel family (Lauraceae) are also present at the Madeira´s Laurissilva forest which is a UNESCO heritage site. It is a rare and fragile ecosystem. The paleobotanical record of Madeira reveals that laurissilva forests has existed in this island for at least 1.8 million years. The levada 25 fontes was built in the late 18 th century, and transports water from Rabaçal to the south of the island. Rabaçal can be described as valley of vertical walls where different types of volcanic rock allow water from the upper water table to emerge in the form of numerous fountains along the walls of the mountain.

What To Expect

Your tour begins with a convenient pick up service from your accommodation. Your driver and mountain guide will take you to the starting point at the Rabaçal car park. From here, set-off on your adventure by walking to Casa do Rabaçal. At this stage, it will be possible to take a break and enjoy a snack. Following this visit, you will hike the Levada das 25 fontes, which will transport you to the heart of the Laurissilva forest. Throughout your experience, you'll have the opportunity to observe the endemic flora of Madeira, such as the species of the Laurissilva Forest and local fauna, which is mainly composed of bird species. The tour ends at the car park, where you will begin your journey back to your accommodation.

We had a great day hiking with Jorge at Rabacal (Levada das 25 Fontes / Levada do Risco). He is knowledgeable, very friendly and always goes above and beyond to deliver the best adventure.

Great way to get to know Madeira’s nature and history. We went to Rabaçal and the 25 Fountain’s Waterfall. Jorge is an excellent guide he knows the area by heart and he can give you recommendations about where to go next or which restaurants to visit. I can not recommend it enough!

We had a great hike with Jorge. It was entirely tailored to our needs (ladies in our 50’s & 60’s). Amazing views and very informative. We did a 3 hour tour but Jorge was so flexible allowing us to stop for coffee and a local bar for traditional poncha. We will return and definitely do another hike with Jorge.

Fantastic hiking tour to Rabacal and the 25 fountains. Picked up on time in a small group which is far better and more personal than the large crowded groups you see with some tour companies. The guide Jorge was very friendly and experienced with hiking, being a trail runner, and also knew a lot about the island and the different flora he pointed out along the hike. Highly recommend this company.

This activity was provided by Madeira Mountain Tours (which we booked through Get Your Guide). Jorge, the owner of this relatively new company who was born in Madeira, both drove and accompanied us on the whole hike giving us interesting facts about the rock formations, plants and history of the area and about the Island in general. The Rabacal area is beautiful with all the waterfalls and fountains. We couldn't have wished for a better day. Afterwards we booked a second tour with Jorge directly, this time to the Larano area in the South East with fantastic coastal views followed by a Levada walk into Machico. We would highly recommend Madeira Mountain Tours to anyone seeking a personalised and quality hiking experience in Madeira.
