Explore western São Miguel on a relaxed small-group van tour, combining volcanic viewpoints, coastal scenery, and iconic crater lakes.
Depart from Ponta Delgada and travel up the Sete Cidades mountain range, stopping at Pico do Carvão for wide views over the island. Continue to Lagoa do Canário, a quiet crater lake, followed by a short walk to the famous Boca do Inferno viewpoint with panoramic views over the Sete Cidades caldera. Stop at Vista do Rei and Cerrado das Freiras for different perspectives over the twin lakes.
Enjoy a traditional buffet lunch at a local restaurant, including a main dish, drink, dessert, and coffee.
In the afternoon, follow the west coast with a stop at Miradouro do Escalvado, then visit the coastal village of Mosteiros to admire lava rock formations and natural pools. Continue along the north coast with scenic viewpoints, passing through Rabo de Peixe and Ribeira Grande, before finishing at Lagoa do Fogo, one of São Miguel’s most beautiful crater lakes.

Boca do Inferno viewpoint involves a moderate walk of approximately 20 minutes each way. This stop may not be suitable for guests with limited mobility.

What To Expect
Stop at Pico do Carvão, a volcanic viewpoint offering wide panoramic views over São Miguel’s central area. From here, it’s possible to see both the north and south coasts of the island, as well as surrounding volcanic formations.
Lagoa do Canario
Visit Lagoa do Canário, a small and peaceful crater lake surrounded by dense vegetation. This lesser-known lake is a great example of São Miguel’s volcanic origin and natural beauty.

5.00A wonderful day of beautiful scenery both inland and along the sea. Gonçalo took us to amazing lookouts and shared his knowledge and love of his country with us. He is very personable and his humour throughout was good. Excellent day!!

5.00It was a really wonderful experience. The route was perfectly designed, covering all the highlights of the west and gave us chances to walk around and connect with nature. I was lucky to have good weather for a clear view of the volcanic lake in January, and equally lucky to have João as my tour guide. He explained the island’s history and hidden stories behind the scenery all along the way, and played traditional Azorean music in the car to amp up the vibe. The noon buffet was tasty with plenty of choices. 10/10 Recommend!

5.00My husband and I visited the Azores on our honeymoon and we are so glad we did this tour! Joao was our guide and he was very knowledgeable and super friendly! The tour was so worth it, the food was amazing. We loved seeing all the points of interest! We did the East tour as well, and combined with staying in the walkable center of Ponta Delgada, we did not rent a car but still felt like we got a great experience of the island.

5.00Today’s tour of the Seven Cities and the lagoons was an excellent experience. Mr. João demonstrated great professionalism, punctuality and knowledge about the history, nature and curiosities of the places visited. All along, he was very attentive, explaining each point clearly and always available to clarify doubts. The visit was well organized, with enough time to appreciate the landscapes and take photos (although a little rain was already planned), making the tour even more enjoyable. I highly recommend the tour with Mr. John who wants to know the Seven Cities and the lagoons in a quiet, informative and safe way.
