Thermopylae
Thermopylae is a place in Greece where a narrow coastal passage existed in antiquity. It derives its name from its hot sulphur springs. In Greek mythology the Hot Gates is one of the entrances to Hades. Thermopylae is the site of a battle between the Greek forces and the invading Persian forces, commemorated by Simonides of Ceos in the famous epitaph, "Go tell the Spartans, stranger passing by, That here obedient to their laws we lie." Thermopylae is the only land route large enough to bear any significant traffic between Lokris and Thessaly. To go from north to south along the east coast of the Balkan peninsula requires use of the pass, and so Thermopylae has been the site of several battles.
Battlefield of Thermopylae
The Battle of Thermopylae was fought between an alliance of Ancient Greek city-states, led by King Leonidas I of Sparta, and the Achaemenid Empire of Xerxes I. It was fought in 480 BC over the course of three days, during the second Persian invasion of Greece. The battle took place simultaneously with the naval battle at Artemisium. It occurred at the narrow coastal pass of Thermopylae ("The Hot Gates") in August or September 480 BC. The Persian invasion was a delayed response to the defeat of the first Persian invasion of Greece, which had been ended by the Athenian victory at the Battle of Marathon in 490 BC. By 480 BC, Xerxes had amassed a massive army and navy and set out to conquer all of Greece. The Athenian politician and general Themistocles had proposed that the allied Greeks block the advance of the Persian army at the pass of Thermopylae, while simultaneously blocking the Persian navy at the Straits of Artemisium.

George was amazing! Very knowledgeable and personable. This might be the best tour we’ve taken and George recommended a fantastic family restaurant with a gorgeous view in Delphi. Would recommend this tour to anyone!

We felt so lucky to have Michael as our driver. In addition to his professionalism as a driver, he shared his perspectives on life in Greece and also gave us great recommendations. (Including a fantastic tavern in Delphi for lunch) Thanks, Michael!

We had a great trip. Before the trip, they communicated clearly with us about where to park our car, pickup point, pickup time etc. Nicholas was a great driver! If you had any questions, or felt like you needed to stop somewhere you could just ask him. He also had cooled water with him in the car which was also very nice. He also drove very smoothly so we didn’t worry for a second. He also made reservations for an amazing restaurant at the village next to Delphi, which had great food and an even better view! We were very happy with Nick as our driver! Thermopylae was also very impressive (especially is you understand the history). Delphi was one of the largest sites we’ve been to and definitely one of the most beautiful. Delphi is a little bit of a hike from top to bottom, but definitely worth it. We also really loved the Delphi museum, which had a beautiful mixed collection (a few shields and helmets, mostly sculptures). All and all, this was our favourite day here in Greece!j

We would like to thank our driver, George, for his insights. Based on his recommendation, we had a delicious lunch at a family run restaurant, that used local ingredients in its meals. This was an amazing trip. It combined the historic with incredible countryside views and the prettiest of ski resort towns in a single day. The restaurant selected for lunch was stunning both from the food and the views from the rear terrace, we felt like we were eating on a cliff surrounded by the most spectacular scenery imaginable! Our guide Alex was so kind, knowledgable and helpful it made our trip even better.

Thermoplyae was interesting and we did learn about the battle of the 300 Spartans, from here we moved on to Delphi which was incredible, it is a bit of a walk and just when you think you have seen it all you turn a corner and there is more, well worth the climb to the top to see the stadium. From here to the museum which held many interesting artifacts. We then visited a local restaurant recommended and booked for us by our driver Costa, a walk around the town and back to the car for the return journey to Athens. Costa was an absolute pleasure to have as our driver, he was helpful and knowledgeable answering all our questions along the way.

We had a wonderful time with Costa. He was so entertaining and knowledgeable. The drive seems to go unnoticed, because of the information. I would highly recommend asking for on your next tour.
