Leonidas Monument
Leonidas was a king of the Greek city-state of Sparta, and the 17th of the Agiad line, a dynasty which claimed descent from the mythological demigod Heracles and Cadmus. Leonidas was son of King Anaxandridas II. He succeeded his half-brother King Cleomenes I to the throne in 489 BC. Leonidas had a notable participation in the Second Persian War, where he led the allied Greek forces to a last stand at the Battle of Thermopylae (480 BC) while attempting to defend the pass from the invading Persian army; he died at the battle and entered myth as the leader of the 300 Spartans. While the Greeks lost this battle, they were able to expel the Persian invaders in the following year.

My wife and I went on this tour and spending a relaxing day riding through the Greek countryside ALONE was worth every penny! The views are breathtaking and never ending! The best part was our guide Alex. He was incredible! He was super personable, friendly, spoke great English, and let us explore each stop on our own. While not an “official tour guide”, he gave us all the info we needed before each stop then allowed us to explore on our own, at our own pace, while he sat back and let us take it in. No lectures, no groups, no overbearing history lesson in broken English. Just the right amount of history and direction to let us enjoy the moment. While Thermopylae is VERY underwhelming as an attraction, the rest of the day more than made up for it. If you’re questioning whether you should do this tour or not, stop and just book it. You won’t regret it.

There wasn't too much to see at Thermopylae but it was worth the stop. Delphi was amazing. It was beautiful and the mountains were majestic. Driver was great too.

If you want a perfect day ask for Alex. He was the perfect private tour guide. He was beyond knowledgeable. He didn’t talk too much and didn’t talk too little. He stopped at all the perfect viewing sights and his driving was impeccable!! We highly recommend this tour.

This was an amazing experience! The tour itself and the stops and the countryside were amazing. We learned so much history and everything was on our timeline, with no rush. Our driver George was outstanding! He knew so much and took us to get photo stops. We could not have asked for better. We knew it would be a small group experience but it ended up just the two of us and George in a very comfortable car.

Alex was incredible. He didn't give a canned history pitch. We had a real dialogue and he answered all kinds of questions about Greece. Delphi is such a wonderful place. If we ever come back, we will be booking with LS tours.

Our driver, Nikos, was so kind. The van was very comfortable, and he gave us cold waters throughout the day. He was knowledgeable, and talked to us about things while we drove. The only thing that could’ve made this better would have been having him, or another guide, walk with us at Delphi to explain it and guide us. I recommend setting that up. The museum is ok alone, but the ruins really need a guide of some kind.

Based on previous reviews and now our experience, we were fortunate to have Alex as our driver-guide for LS Tours and Transfer’s private tour to Thermopylae and Delphi. Alex provided excellent service by being punctual with our hotel pickup, providing useful information and comments, and being most accommodating. It has been my life-time dream (and at the top of my bucket list) to visit the Thermopylae battlefield area as I’m a third generation namesake of Leonidas. Though the name sometimes has presented conversation challenges, the visit confirmed to us the King’s character and leadership as reflected in history as well as the movie “300”. (Come and Take It) Though the landscape has apparently substantially changed, the museum video helps visualize the battle; in addition, the exhibits and Alex’s informative comments were more than sufficient to make this the highlight of our trip to Greece ( even though others may not be as enthusiastic). The drive to Delhi through the mountains was comfortable and offered the opportunity to see some different Greece scenery. The Delphi archeological site together with the museum were also very interesting and informative. The site (terrain) could be a challenge especially if climbing to the upper region -site of a stadium ( with an unusual design—lengthy instead of wide). Alex gave a pre-visit prep to include information about the Temple of Apollo and the oracle Pythia who occupied the site giving predictions to many including Alexander the Great. On the return trip, Alex again showed his professionalism by assisting me in confirming necessary documentation needed for our scheduled tour the next day when contacted by the tour operator. Most appreciative. Delphi is apparently the second most visited site in Greece; though lengthy ( about 6 hours driving), Alex and LS Tours makes it comfortable and most enjoyable and informative.
