Tours of Jewish Shanghai
Meet your guide at the Peace Hotel (formerly the Cathay Hotel, built by Sir Victor Sassoon) on Shanghai's famous Bund riverfront. Take in magnificent views of the city as your guide discusses in length the Baghdadi-Jewish legacy of the city. After that, your guide will take you to the Hongkou district, also known as the Shanghai Ghetto. In the Hongkou district, you will visit various places including the Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum (Ohel Moshe Synagogue) and a monument in Huoshan Park. In addition, your guide will take you to explore the back lanes of the district and to visit a Chinese home where Jewish refugees used to live. Over the course of the tour, your guide will discuss the cultural and commercial contribution of the Russian Jewish immigration at the turn of the century and the Jewish experience in Shanghai under the Japanese occupation during WWII. This is not just a superficial glance at the highlights of Jewish life in Shanghai. It is a four-hour, a mini-course led by an expert guide with encyclopedic knowledge and intense passion that brings to life a vanished world and attracts visitors from every continent.

This was one of the very best tours that we have ever taken in 40 years of traveling. Dvir made the whole Jewish experience in Shanghai come alive. It is described as a walking tour, but in reality he arranged for us to sit periodically for extended explanations. There are also vans to transport the group over the longer distances. Whether you are Jewish or not - do not miss this tour

Thoroughly enjoyed this tour. The guide is a passionate expert on the topic of the history of the jews in Shanghai who speaks fluent English. It is a great way of seeing some of the history of Shanghai that you would otherwise be largely unaware of.

The tour leader was clearly an expert with much experience. He was entertaining and very sympathetic in this sensitive situation. An enjoyable tour which I highly recommend..

Dvir is one of the best walking tour guides I have come across. He is knowledgeable, has a dry sense of humour and generous. I we t on his tour 11 years ago, and returned - nothing like repeat business as a recommendation. We followed up the Jewish tour the next day with the Old City/New City tour. He takes us to places to places one would not go to alone.
