It will be a 3-hour trip from Popayán to the archaeological park and at the beginning we will recharge with a good breakfast in the middle of the countryside to explore the impressive pyramids built by ancient indigenous civilizations, designed to enjoy the amazing landscape. Tierradentro

The National Archaeological Park of Tierradentro, one of the most important sites in Colombia, where we will arrive at this place of great anthropological and historical wealth, and once there you will understand why it is called that. We will take a tour of the park, where we will be able to observe vestiges of three historical periods: pre-Hispanic, colonial and republican. We will walk among its underground tombs called hypogeums, excavated in the volcanic rock itself, and we will admire the decorations of the different funerary chambers. Did you know that some reach a depth of 8 meters? In addition, we will learn the history of the brave Paece indigenous people, who inhabited this territory before the arrival of the Spanish and allied themselves with their neighbors to try to protect their lands.

We took the 3 day tour to the archaeological parks of Tierradentro and San Agustin. Our guide Jasmín in Tierradentro impressed us with her deep knowledge of indigenous history and her connection with the local community. In San Agustin, Hernan guided us through the mystery of the pre-Columbian statues with patience, answering every question with detail and enthusiasm. His kindness and knowledge made the whole tour even more special. Everything was perfectly organized, the driver Elkin was also very knowledgeable about the tour, definitely an experience we recommend 100%!

The tour guides, Elkin and Yasmin, are amazing and can answer any question while showing the amazing communities surrounding Tierradentro. They were patient with a significantly older participant (my mother) and provided an impressive array of experiences with anecdotes to boot for our bespoke tour. I highly recommend them and they are well worth the price for trips that might be a huge hassle otherwise if short on time.
Interesting tour to experience unique history and culture in this beautiful part of the world.

Our guide and driver, Harold, provided us with a great experience, with his local knowledge and friendly personality. It is a very long day and maybe you should be fitter than us to get the most out of the opportunity , but with Harold's patience and support we achieved our ambitions. There is too much in this quite big area to see in one day, but it allows you to experience some of the important parts. Be prepared for cool in the early morning and then heat during the day, with the right clothing, equipment and taking lots of fluids. You get a good breakfast and lunch but there aren't many opportunities around there for buying drinks. The fitter you are, the better experience you will have and definitely not suitable for disabled people. Personally I think my wife and I exceeded our capabilities with Harold's encouragement. A lot of history in a beautiful area, with lots of photo opportunities. Thanks also to Harold for making our day, my 70th birthday, a memorable and special one. He even brought a cake and candles on top of the Pyramid!

For a history and archeology enthusiast, it is truly a complete visit that Elkin and his Destinos Tour agency offer us. You can discover the magnificent landscapes of the Cauca region, eat a good meal in the town of Inza and discover the fascinating history of an archeology site that is still very little visited! To do this, we benefited from the explanations of Jasmin, our other guide, who is indigenous and lives in the region. I highly recommend this tour if you want to get off the beaten track in eastern Colombia.
