A small ancient village in South-Eastern Poland, Zalipie, is definitely one of the country’s top tourist attractions. Not because it has five-stars hotels or massive glass buildings, but on the contrary, due to its small wooden cottages, which are painted in the most vibrant colors.

The secluded village of Zalipie is home to a charming tradition.  Over a century ago the women of the village began to paint their houses: however, it was not the single, uniform color one might expect from a traditional and conservative society.

Dom Malarek

Zalipie- colourful village, is famous for the decoration of its houses, with cheerful paintings on the walls and stoves, and crepe-paper flowers, paper-cut designs and hay spiders. This tradition has existed in the Powiśle Dąbrowskie region since the end of the 19th century. Flowers were also painted on external walls of peasant cottages and farm buildings, on fences, wells and even kennels. In Zalipie, there are now around 20 painted houses. The best known example of this original folk artwork is the homestead of Felicia Curyłowa (currently a branch of the District Museum of Tarnów), a Zalipie painter whose painting was already known in the period between the wars. During our tour, you will get to see a number of decorated houses, a museum, and a small shop with unique hand made souvenirs.

This is about 1.5 hours comfortable drive from Krakow. My family really enjoyed this unique experience. Our guide Matthew (Macek) was very interesting and informative. He gave us an amazing recommendation for dinner when we got back to Krakow. Best potato pancakes ever!

My friend and I did not participate in a tour. We drove there ourself and we did not regret. This village outside of Krakow, is very unique. Many house are hand painted with beautiful, colorful flower like ornaments. Each house has it's own unique decorations going from generation to generation. We learned that each year, there is a competition and villagers paint their houses from the scratch. It is really worthy to spend a couple of hours to stroll through that village, especially when weather is nice.

Magnificent to discover if you go to southern Poland. The whole village is painted, even the square, the hutches, the dog's kennel.... We are not going there in July 2023 but in 1996, not planned in the online document....

Tomasz was easily one of the most knowledgeable tour guides I’ve ever met. On the way to Zalipie, he regaled us with information on every building and village we passed. Within the village itself, he was able to to introduce us to many local artists and even bring us inside their homes in a way that would have never been possible if we’d traveled to Zalipie by ourselves. It was one of the best travel experiences of my life. Not only that, but it was also one of the easiest. All I had to do was book the tour, and from that moment on every aspect of the day was fully arranged and taken care of.

Our day with Maciej was a highlight of our trip to Poland. Active Poland was easy to communicate with and I booked our trip before we left Canada. We were picked up right on time and Maciej drove the hour and a half to Zalipie. We never could have done this trip on our own. He knew where all of the unique painted houses were located and had a good relationship with the owners. He was knowledgable in the areas history and spoke excellent English. I would book another trip with Poland Active at any chance. Also ask Macicj to stop for delicious waffles.

Maciej arrived promptly to our hotel to pick us up in his van. He was a very safe and cautious driver obeying speed limits. The drive to Zalipie took approx 2 hours, a very scenic drive. Maciej is an encyclopedia, he gave us plenty of historical information. He showed us numerous points of interest along the way. We stopped at Sw Norberta, a beautiful and breathtaking church. In Zalipie, Maciej is well know amongst the locals, we made numerous stops to meet the locals with their beautiful painted houses. Maciej was extra helpful with my mother with some mobility issues and very patient. During the drive, Maciej slowed down to allow us to take photos and pointed out a beautiful stork in its rooftop nest. We returned via highway back to Krakow, Maciej was Full if stories and information. Definitely recommend this excursion, it was a highlight of our trip to Krakow!!!

My parents, girlfriend, and I had an incredible day experience on our trip to Zalipie guided by Maciej. From the moment Maciej greeted us at our hotel we knew we were going to have a wonderful day led by an incredibly knowledgeable, professional, and kind local expert. On the journey from Kraków to Zalipie he brought us through picturesque countryside and was able to share some information about the region. He listened to us and the things we were interested in to curate an experience that aligned with what we hoped to learn about the surrounding area. (Note: there is the cleanest and nicest gas station stop along the way there that has has some snacks you can buy for the day ahead, and throughout the journey plenty of restrooms available at different stops.) Once we arrived at Zalipie, he took us to approximately 8 different stops and another 5 or so locations that we could drive by to take pictures and learn about the home from the comfort of the van. At each stop, the women who have helped to make Zalipie so beautiful graciously opened their homes to us and we were able to interact with them (with help from Maciej’s warm relationship with them and his Polish translation for us). On the way home, Maciej took us a different route to maximize the different things we could see. (He even pulled over on the side of the road so my father, who has gotten a recent interest in birds, could take a picture of a magnificent stork nest along the route.) The entire experience was a great way to not only see and learn about the lovely community of Zalipie, but also to get a look at some of the smaller areas east of Kraków generally, led by an excellent, thoughtful local guide. Definitely recommend to anyone looking to get out of the city and learn more about the beauty (in many forms) of the Polish people.
