What To Expect

At the start of your session, your host will welcome you with a brief introduction to the world of matcha. Tea ceremony lies at the heart of Japanese culture, and to enjoy this centuries old ritual will provide a deeper understanding of the history, architecture and tastes of Kyoto. Before performing an authentic tea ceremony, your personal instructor will explain a little about the steps involved in the ceremony, the utensils used and the importance of the rooms decoration and layout. Guests will enjoy a seasonal sweet with their tea, and there is plenty of time for asking questions and chatting with the host. The experience ends with each guest having the opportunity to make their own bowl of frothy matcha, mastering the basics of tea making. We want your time with us to be a rich and enjoyable one, and to that end we encourage guests to not only participate but actively ask any questions they might have about Japan and tea ceremony. All our instructors speak English fluently and hail from one of Kyoto's three main schools of tea ceremony. At Camellia authenticity and inclusivity are very important, and we strive to provide memories our guests will treasure.

Our tea ceremony experience in Kyoto was truly magical. From the moment we entered the serene, traditional tea room, we were transported into another world. The setting was peaceful, with soft bamboo floors and delicate flower arrangements that set the perfect tone for the ceremony. The host, a skilled tea master, walked us through every step with grace and patience, explaining the symbolism behind each movement and the significance of the tea itself. Sipping the matcha, prepared with such care, felt like a meditative experience—each taste rich and grounding. The whole ritual was more than just about tea; it was a deep cultural immersion that allowed us to appreciate the artistry, philosophy, and history behind this timeless tradition. It was a moment of stillness that brought us closer to the heart of Japanese culture. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Kyoto!

Wonderful from start to finish. Enjoyed the explanation and demonstration of the different elements of the tea ceremony, especially the importance of cleaning your mind and respect for who the tea is being prepared for. Also enjoyed making our own delicious dose of matcha tea!

Interesting experience and in an area well worth visiting. The ceremony itself was in a very small, plain room. A man in drab colours led the ceremony. Overall experience was therefore a 3 or 4 out of 5.

Tea ceremony guide was friendly, hospitable, knowledgeable, professional, and entertaining. His explanation of the tea ceremony was good. It was a pleasure to watch him perform the tea ceremony process. Would recommend.
