Borgo Storico di Manarola
Built in the valley of the torrente Groppo, until 1950 the stream which runs through the town was completely uncovered and 11 stone bridges allowed the people to cross from one side to the other. Over the next thirty years the stream was gradually covered over. The ancient village was destroyed by Saracen pirates (in 849) and the surviving people fled in land to live. When the seas were made safe again in the 11th century, people came back to settle here under the protection of the Republic of Genova. By the 1200's cultivation of vines was not only established but the wine they produced was sought after. The church of San Lorenzo was begun in 1338. The patron saint is celebrated on the 10th of August with a procession through the streets carrying a statue of him. The castle which protected the town from pirates is now a private home, you can see the garden from the panoramic walk, it is on the rock immediately above the port. Manarola is now famous for its Christmas nativity scene which is the biggest in the world. Figures outlined in thousands of lights cover the hillside. Also an Easter scene is made.

The guides were wonderful. I read them but the reviews don’t even prepare you for what a long day this is. You will see beautiful vistas for sure. There is a tremendous amount of walking even without the hike. We had a hot day which was beautiful but also got uncomfortable. The towns all have lovely features and are interesting to see but after two or three they all begin to look the same. Very touristy, very, very crowded. The food became repetitive and mediocre. We weren’t offered the Pisa option and the boat ride was lovely but again packed with other tourists…it wasn’t a charter for this tour group. You will constantly be on and off crowded trains, most just for a few minutes at a time. The guides organized it all excellently but just be prepared. It’s an exhausting day even for middle aged people in good shape who love good food and history!

Victoria was a great guide! Cinque Terre is beautiful! We did the hike. Going up to the halfway point wasn't actually too bad and I felt very confident. It was mostly steps and some flat areas. The second half was a lot more difficult. The terrain was very uneven and the steps were high and hard to get down. My knees were screaming by the end. I am a physically active 67 year old, so take that for what it's worth. All in all, I'm glad I did it as there were beautiful views of the Mediterranean Sea from up there. We were unable to go on the boat ride because the water was too choppy. Plan on a really long day.

Jo and Gerard were awesome tour guides! They were very knowledgeable and friendly. Just be aware of the boat ride. If the water is rough it will be an adventure! This was no fault of the tour operator but the boat company. Anyway Cinque Terre is beautiful and won’t disappoint with the fabulous views
