Irohazaka Route

A scenic highway connects the city of Nikkō with the Oku-Nikkō area. It is divided into two one-way roads, Iroha-zaka No. 1 and No. 2, which traverse the 440-meter difference in elevation between the Umagaeshi area at the bottom and Lake Chūzenji at the top through a series of switchbacks. “Iroha” is the name of a poem that uses each of the 48 characters of the Japanese syllabary exactly once. The poem appears, one character at a time, on signs at each bend in the road. The first 20 characters appear on the ascending route (No. 2), while the descent (No. 1) starts from the 21st character and finishes the poem.

Great experience. Definetely recommended. Nikko is picturesque and waterfalls are worth visiting. Our Guide Sheila was very friendly, kind, enthusiastic, knowledgeable and well organized. She even gave us some tips to explore further Tokyo and live the whole experience.

Absolute failure. We were told to be at the pickup location 15 minutes early, which we were. We waited, and waited, and no one ever showed up. We tried calling the provided number multiple times, and the calls went unanswered every single time. Not only did they waste our time, but they ruined our plans for the day in Nikko on 08/04/2025. This is a complete scam and a total lack of professionalism. Do not book with this company unless you want to be left stranded.

  • More time at the temple would be nice

It'll take a while to get there. I would have liked a little more time (only 1:15h) at the temples and shrines. The stop at the lake with the "hot springs" could be given to you completely. A run-down place with zero flair and sights. This stop was a waste of time.

  • A great escape from Tokyo's heat and a nice cultural experience.

We really enjoyed seeing the Nikko Toshogu Shrine. Even though there were hundreds of people there it felt very serene and peaceful. The waterfall was also impressive. I didn't like the bus. We were on a 20 seater bus and there wasn't much leg room. At least the air conditioner worked well. I know the tour company can't control the traffic, but we sat for ages, not going anywhere. Having said that, I would recommend this tour.

Wow! There are not many times I am rendered speechless while traveling but I was on this trip. The waterfall HAS to be seen with your own two eyes. Nothing compares. And the Nikko shrine was such a great way to immerse yourself with Japanese culture and history. SHEILA WAS AMAZING! I hope you all get her as your guide.
