Irohazaka Route
A scenic highway connects the city of Nikkō with the Oku-Nikkō area. It is divided into two one-way roads, Iroha-zaka No. 1 and No. 2, which traverse the 440-meter difference in elevation between the Umagaeshi area at the bottom and Lake Chūzenji at the top through a series of switchbacks. “Iroha” is the name of a poem that uses each of the 48 characters of the Japanese syllabary exactly once. The poem appears, one character at a time, on signs at each bend in the road. The first 20 characters appear on the ascending route (No. 2), while the descent (No. 1) starts from the 21st character and finishes the poem.

Unprofessional tour management. Changing timings and itinerary without prior notice. Assigned a guide who was unable to communicate the itinerary to the team memebers.

The host and driver were amazing. Patient with all of us and communicated well. He even gave us a little gift at the end of our tour. Really nice.

The tour guide was very friendly and ready to help. The driver was professional and the bus was comfortable. The lunch was tasty (be prepared to have cash). The shrine is amazing. Also could have had a brief stop at the bridge. The Lake is very lovely. Altogether we enjoyed a very nice day in Nikko. I would definitely recommend this tour!

Enjoyed the visits overall of the shrine, waterfall and lake. Scenery on the journey was interesting and the coach very comfortable. Not bad value at all. Trip would have benefited from the guide giving more information be it specific or general on Japan.

It was heartening to see that they also paid attention to Japanese and dealt with important areas. The time allocation was just right. Souvenirs are also nice. Irohazaka was also saved by driving as little motion sickness as possible. The advice on recommended foods was also helpful. Thank you 😊

Nice to see. It's like a movie. Bring Yen in cash. Lack of time to better explore.

Overall, the tour to Nikko was enjoyable with a few notable highlights and some minor letdowns. The tour bus itself was a great start — brand new, extremely comfortable, and equipped with WiFi, which made the journey smooth and relaxing. The visit to the temple was definitely the highlight of the day. The architecture and atmosphere were breathtaking, and it’s absolutely worth seeing in person. However, I was slightly disappointed that the tour wasn’t fully guided. While a few key points were explained to us, we were mostly left to explore on our own for about an hour. Some more in-depth commentary throughout would have added value. Unfortunately, the weather didn’t cooperate during the waterfall and gondola portion of the tour. Heavy rain obscured the views, so there’s not much to say on that front — just bad luck, really. Lastly, the hot spring experience wasn’t quite what I had expected. Instead of outdoor natural hot springs, it was an indoor onsen with spring water pumped in. It was still relaxing, but not the authentic outdoor setting I was hoping for. In summary, it was a comfortable and well-organized tour with some memorable moments, but a few elements could have been improved or better clarified in the description. I’d give this 3.5 if I could but rounded up since the staff was nice and the bus was very comfortable.
