Experience Mexican food like never before with a market tour and cooking class! Learn about the ancient and colonial roots of the dishes you love, prepare them from scratch and feast like an emperor!

This is one of the most complete culinary experiences we've seen in Mexico City. Many places offer either market tours, classes or tastings, and they teach you how to make a single dish or a couple of related dishes. With us, you get the best of all worlds, as first, your guide will give you a comprehensive overview of the history of Mexican cuisine, then, you'll prepare an entire menu that consists of multiple courses and sides, and finally, you'll learn about and taste lots of local drinks. Not only does this represent great value for money, it also makes for an experience that's the highlight of many of our guests' time in Mexico!

We can happily plan for most dietary requirements, but unfortunately strict kosher is not possible at this time.

What To Expect

Understand and enjoy Mexican cuisine more than ever with this market tour and cooking class! On your one-hour tour of Roma's Mercado Medellín, you'll learn how ancient Mesoamerican ingredients and techniques shape the Mexican cuisine we know today, and why the Spanish conquest of Mexico in the 16th century changed the way people eat both here and in Europe forever. Then, back at the beautiful Condesa home of your chef/ guide, you'll make all your favorite dishes from scratch using fresh ingredients. Prepare to get your hands dirty, as in just 3.5 hours, you'll rustle up tamales, mole and tortillas. Mexican craft beer and soft drinks will keep you hydrated. Finally, you'll enjoy the delicious fruits of your labor at a table laid with local linens and artisanal tableware. Reflect on the day's experience over dessert and finish with a cup of Mexican wine and/ or mezcal. Most dietary requirements can be accommodated. Wheelchair users have attended the class before, but the building does not have an elevator. Allergy sufferers should be aware that there are two cats in the house. Solo travelers are welcome. Just reach out!

We did the market tour and three course meal cooking class. The market tour was fantastic, Jim shared about the history of how ingredients crossed continents and developed into Mexican cuisine today. The dishes we made all turned out delicious. Everything was very clean and sanitary. Jim has done a lot of training and clearly knows his stuff, he’s also very open and personable. Highly recommend this course, I’m sure all of his classes are great, but I would recommend this one with the market tour.

My husband had such a wonderful, meaningful time on this tour with Jim. We booked ‘The Works’ Market Tour, Cooking Class and Mexican Feast and it was so worthwhile! Jim was warm and inviting with a wealth of knowledge and passion for Mexican food and its origins. We learned a lot. I appreciated all the details from the beautiful locally made spoons and bowls and decor in his lovely Condesa home! The meal was delicious and I have never made such flavourful authentic Mexican food and this knowledge I gained will last a lifetime for me! I left feeling SO inspired and happy to have found this tour and support Jim’s dream job :)

This was an absolute amazing experinece. Shopping in the market was one of the best I many other market/cooking classes I have taken. The authetenic approach to cooking was awesome. The only suggestion I have is to shorten the evening - the entire day was too long.

  • A great food experience!

Jim was a great host! I learned an amazing amount about the origins of food and its movement around the world. It was the best meal I had in Mexico City and feel confident that I can try and replicate it at home. We even learned about chocolate and prepared our own hot chocolate. I have no hesitation in recommending this experience

Words cannot express how wonderful this experience was. Jim was a delight, so knowledgeable and truly went above and beyond. This was part of my wife and I’s honeymoon, and it could not have been more perfect. He imparted so much interesting info about ingredients and cooking, his house was the perfect setting, he was so generous with food and drink, even his cats were delightful and stole the show! If you are considering booking this tour-stop considering and just book it. If you are debating between this and another, book this one. I would have gladly paid more and will absolutely continue booking with Jim and refer more people his way!!

This is no mere cooking class; it is an explosion of epicurean delights! We took the private class which allowed us flexibility with menu planning. Chef met us at the Medellín where he taught us about the history of the spices and ingredients we’d be using. While we made móle, tamales, and salsa, Vincente spoiled us with a divine cactus salad and a lesson on herbs such as papolo and epazote. We also learned how to use tequesquité, which was super interesting! Jim wove stories and traditions honoring “las abuelitas” throughout the evening. We really appreciated the use of local and ethically farmed ingredients. Even our delicious craft cocktails were made with locally distilled liquors. This was the best culinary course we’ve ever taken! Thank you both for giving us this incredible experience! It was the highlight of our time in CDMX. We’ll be back!

Such an enjoyable day! A relaxed morning mooch around the market, with some great food history chat and then we prepared tamales, moles and a pork dish back at Jim's home. A great combo of learning new things and meeting new people.

  • Come hungry, leave fulfilled.

Jim was so welcoming, it felt like we were meeting an old friend to catch up. He taught us more about the history of Mexico through food. We purchased all the ingredients we would need to make our meals, and went back to his place to prepare them. The instructions were clear and way to follow, and the food was delicious. Would highly recommend for a half day excursion.
