What To Expect

1

This legendary mountain road connects central Nikko to the Oku-Nikko region and is known for its 48 winding curves, each named after a character from the old Japanese "Iroha" syllabary. Divided into an uphill and downhill route, Irohazaka is especially famous for its dramatic switchbacks and stunning autumn foliage, drawing photographers and anime fans alike—particularly those familiar with Initial D. In October and November, the route is flanked by vibrant red, orange, and yellow leaves, offering some of the most spectacular fall scenery in Japan.

Kegon Falls

One of Japan’s three most celebrated waterfalls, Kegon Waterfall plunges 97 meters from Lake Chuzenji into a rocky basin below. It’s a breathtaking natural attraction that offers visitors both free and paid viewing platforms, the latter providing closer access via an elevator. Surrounded by dense forest, the waterfall becomes even more majestic in autumn, when the surrounding cliffs are ablaze with colorful foliage. Its dramatic beauty has made it a recurring subject in Japanese literature and travel culture.

The short train ride was ok. But ultimately a little too long at 30 min, because nothing special either. Afterwards to the waterfall and unfortunately too late because the sun was no longer shining on it....so it was dark!! You only drive along the slope. Which was really stupid, because msn couldn't see the curves. The lake was beautiful at the end, but even then the sun was already so stupid that you could no longer recognize the mountains colorfully. Definitely not worth it.

For a long journey the bus was mini bus and it was cramped to be sitting 6 hours in total. Also planning was not the best - 4 hours to kill at Kevon Falls was too much time and also we waited for so long for train journey which was 30 mins and again everyone was packed in the train and therefore barely could enjoy the scenery. Over all the only good thing about the day was nature but the trip and the money paid felt was towards nothing. .

  • Too thin itinerary

The itinerary was too thin and lack of attractions, falling far behind expectations from what’s described on online platform. There were only 2 spots - the train and waterfall. We were originally told to pack our own lunch as the programme could be too tight for sit-down lunch, which was however not correct. The trip ended 2 hours earlier than described, though there was lots of free time 2.5 hours for lunch. It’s not worth spending total 5-6 hours on the road but just to see so little, finishing around 5pm
