What To Expect

This legendary mountain road connects central Nikko to the Oku-Nikko region and is known for its 48 winding curves, each named after a character from the old Japanese "Iroha" syllabary. Divided into an uphill and downhill route, Irohazaka is especially famous for its dramatic switchbacks and stunning autumn foliage, drawing photographers and anime fans alike—particularly those familiar with Initial D. In October and November, the route is flanked by vibrant red, orange, and yellow leaves, offering some of the most spectacular fall scenery in Japan.

Kegon Falls

One of Japan’s three most celebrated waterfalls, Kegon Waterfall plunges 97 meters from Lake Chuzenji into a rocky basin below. It’s a breathtaking natural attraction that offers visitors both free and paid viewing platforms, the latter providing closer access via an elevator. Surrounded by dense forest, the waterfall becomes even more majestic in autumn, when the surrounding cliffs are ablaze with colorful foliage. Its dramatic beauty has made it a recurring subject in Japanese literature and travel culture.
