We had fun doing this, but felt that an hour was way to short of a time to do it. We felt a little rushed at the end and the mask was messed up as a result. But worth doing as it is hands on and not just touring sight after sight.

The artist/ owner takes control of finishing the mask so there is no problem if lines are not straight. Even small children come away with great masks

Nicola, our instructor guided us through the entire process of creating a beautiful mask. With more than 20 years experience, he is very knowledgeable and patient. He answered all of our questions and helped us along the way. He is a true artist!

I had such high expectations and it did not even remotely live up to it, Francesco really disappointed. First off, finding the place was almost impossible- but that was the least of our concerns. If you book this, you go into the entrance of the prison and up the stairs. Tell the students on their phones by the door on the second floor that you are there for the mask making class- they’ll tell you where to go. We entered the class and Francesco was there. He told us to select a mask, and start to paint. I swear to you when I say he gave us no guidance. We told him we wanted a gold mask, he handed me the gold spray paint and said stand back a bit and paint. I sprayed it for about 10 mins, and kept looking back and him and every time he was on his phone. He said nothing. By the time I was done, he looked at the mask and said I never saw that before (there were fibers all over the mask). He painted a new mask for me and that was the extent of his help. He then handed us some old plates that had left over paint from the previous class and said paint. He gave no input on colors, design, brushes, guidance, NOTHING! He could have at least made small talk about the history of mask making or the fact that we were in a prison. He didnt tell us what brushes to use, how to correct any errors, or suggestions. After I was done painting, he put the mask by a blow dryer for about 5 mins and then gave it back to me along with a plate of glue for the glitter. I had to ask if I was to use the same brushes for the glue as I did for the paint. Again, no guidance. I put glue on and then walk to the table with the glitter and put the glitter on, section by section. It wasn’t until I did it about 5 times and my after my husband starting gluing, that he said you should take the glitter to the table. Life WTF- could he not have said this earlier? No, he could not have because he was on his phone the ENTIRE time. The most he said to us in one sentence was, “You have 10 minutes left.” Then, after we finished and we were washing up in the bano, some female walked in and said “Francesco?” Which is how we learned his name, not because he introduced himself. I would highly not recommend for the price.

Our tour was at the Doge prison. Felt appropriate in a way. Our guide met us in the entrance and brought us up to the art studio. Not an air-conditioned room tho but not stuffy. We picked from two mask styles and then let the colors go wild. Glitter, gel pens, paints so much fun. Sometimes the mask needs to dry for 10 minutes so that takes time. It really should be a 2 hour class and we took at least 90 minutes. The instructor was fabulous, she helped us with designs and details. Because we are not artists, the masks aren't perfect but they are perfectly fun! We truly enjoyed painting and decorating.
