This tour was incredible. The hiking was great for people who like to hike, it was about 6 miles the first day and 4 miles the second day. It was slippery at times but overall amazing views and a fun trek. We stayed in a cute one room cabin at one of the local towns for the home stay and we were very comfortable, but don’t expect the amenities of a fancy hotel. The food was delicious and the family we stayed with was wonderful. Best of all, when our flight was delayed by 24 hours, the tour was able to accommodate us with no extra charge.

  • Better to book locally

Both guides we had were fantastic. Wonderful, kind women who I really appreciated. But as for the organized tour itself - you are paying a lot more than you would on the local market for an average to cheap experience. The toilet and refrigerator were broken in the hotel room. During the night while I was sleeping at the homestay (Sapa May), there were people behind the house, running around with flashlights outside my open, first -floor window (within a foot of the room), who then shined their lights into my room and looked in. I asked the guide to inquire with the owner - and he said some neighbors wanted to look for snakes, that he told them not to but they promised not to go inside the house so it was okay (?!). It was not okay. It was not acceptable. We saw many "nice" homestay with beautiful views along the way; this was not one of them. If you are booking this before arriving in Vietnam, I recommend just waiting until you are in a city here and booking with a tour operator directly. You are paying (relatively) top dollar here for what is a budget option. One note - regardless of who you travel with, when trekking, there will be women who will follow you along helping give you a hand and guidance while wanting to sell you something at the end. If it has been raining at all, it is ABSOLUTELY worth paying for whatever they're selling or just giving a big tip.
