  • Crown Tours…Not the best

We were disappointed with our experience with Crown Tours. I would recommend another tour operator. Our guide wasn’t the best. We didn’t find his commentary very informative. His strong accent made him difficult to understand as well. He also didn’t ensure the pace for the group as a whole. With one family always dragging behind, and not for physical/understandable reasons, we were always standing around and waiting. Also, our tour start time was 2 pm, but our ticket entrance time to the Colosseum wasn’t until 4 pm so we had to do the sights in reverse, which was not the expected order.

Silvia was amazing. So kind and knowledgeable-her providing images along the tour really fleshed out my understanding of these places, the history and what life was like during those times. This has been my most enjoyable tour in Rome so far because of Silvia. The only downside, which really put a damper on the beginning of my experience, was my interaction with checking in and getting assigned a group. I almost missed my tour because the ‘meeting point’ listed wasn’t actually where I needed to be for an English tour but there were no clear instructions on where to find where I was going. I had to walk another few minutes to where I needed to be and even when I got there I was further confused about how/where to check in. That was all very frustrating but Silvia definitely made up for it.

  • Colosseum was GREAT. Palatine Hill and Roman Forum were so so. Maybe read up on the places a little beforehand.

The tour was through Crown Tours. The colosseum part of the tour was the best. The Palatine Hill and Roman Forum were either just too much info, or not presented in a way that was understandable. Granted I went in without any knowledge at all about either one, but I was so confused during the tour as the guide went from 1 story to another. I was wishing I either read up a little bit about the two places beforehand, or just had a different guide. My husband also really liked the colosseum part of the tour. But! He would have rated the tours overall as a 3, mainly because there weren’t any time given for bathroom breaks! This may seem like a silly thing if you’re touring and reading reviews about tours for the 1st time, but once you experience it, you’ll understand. At another tour we took yesterday, with a different company through Viator, the guide allowed a bathroom break before the tour, warning us that there wasn’t any for another 3 hrs and highly recommend we went. We all did and didn’t think anything of it. So my husband expected the same thing on this tour. I even asked when we checked in if there was a rest room, and the staff said there wasn’t at the check in office but that there were once we entered the colosseum. However, the guide never allotted for a bathroom break and my poor husband kept waiting for one and keeping his eye out for one for almost the duration of the tour. Can you imagine his discomfort! And he wasn’t the only one. A woman in the group finally asked about a break and the guide said in about 1/2 an hours (that’s when the tour was scheduled to end!). She and my husband and kids made a bee line for a rest room that they saw in the distance, as the guide went on without part of the group! However, my 16 yo son appreciated the guide’s dry humor and I appreciated his efforts to keep the group engaged. He was very knowledgeable even though his stories seemed a bit disjointed at times.Overall score with input from our family of 4 is 3.9 stars.
