Cable cars are to San Francisco what the subway is to New York City and the El is to Chicago. Refurbished and equipped with new tracks, cables, turnarounds and cable propulsion machinery, San Francisco's cable car system operates much as it did on August 2, 1873 when Andrew S. Hallidie guided the first car down Clay Street. Today, it is the world's last manually operated cable car system that attracts 9.7 million riders each year. Don't miss out on riding the historic cable cars from Union Square to Fisherman's Wharf. A single ride costs $8 and a one-day pass for unlimited rides costs $13. Choose from three cable car lines. Two start at Powell and Market and continue to Fisherman's Wharf. One starts at California and Market and continues to Van Ness Avenue. Board at the cable car turntables, at the beginning or end of each route, or look for the brown-and-white cable car sign posts. San Francisco's cable car system was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1964. It was featured in the 1965 movie In Harm's Way when Paula Prentiss hopped on a car going downhill to the waterfront with Alcatraz in the distance..
