Masham
We head off to Lower Wenslydale, with your Tour Guide telling you about the history and features of the area. The first stop is at the traditional market town of Masham in Lower Wensleydale, which gained its market charter over 700 years ago in 1251. Here you can learn some of the Town’s history from your guide and see the remains of an Anglo-Saxon cross shaft, thought to be around 1300 years old, at the Church of St. Mary the Virgin, explore the quaint shops or just enjoy a leisurely Yorkshire brew and some cake in one of the cafes on the square – the choice is yours!
Grassington
Heading across Masham Moor where the sheep roam freely amongst the Heather and vast open landscape on our way over the tops to Nidderdale. The fantastic views and scenery over Gouthwaite Reservoir and miles of drystone walls make it perfect for some great photo stops. We arrive at the picturesque town of Grassington, famous for its role as the fictional town of ‘Darrowby’ in the new ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ television series, first aired in 2020. Here you will have 1.5 hours free time to explore the shops, Cafes and filming locations or even pop into the Devonshire Arms pub (The Drovers in All Creatures Great and Small) for a drink with the locals!

This was a wonderful opportunity to actually see the things and places we have read and so much about….the moors, the dales, the little villages, Bolton Abbey and “Darrowby.” Chris did an outstanding job describing the history and the agriculture of the areas we visited.

Superb guiding by Chris. Many reststops and longer interesting stops at important James Herriot places. Just what we were looking for. Chris was speaking about what we were seeing. Cows, goates, nature, you name it. We loved it all.

Mark our driver was great! Very knowledgeable of the area and what travelers want to know. Mark made it a point to learn our names and a bit about each of us. It was an amazing day for the tour, 60 degrees and sunny and very blue sky which contrasted nicely with the green Yorkshire dales. Each stop was perfectly timed and great stories and suggestions for the travel stops. The coffee breakfast stop in Masham was great the spot he suggested was perfect. Lunch in Grassington was nice, not as much James Herriot stuff as maybe we wanted. Had to rely on the memories of what the town looked like on the show. During the stop we asked Mark about how to get to Thirsk from York to see the James Herriot museum and by the next stop he provided us detailed train information update with bank holiday schedules! Thank you. It was a wonderful day and would never have seen the beautiful Yorkshire country without this outstanding tour!
