A bit of history… It was the maritime environment that inspired the monks of the Middle Ages to settle in this very location and build what would become one of the most extraordinary examples of religious architecture. Aubert, the Bishop of Avranches, is said to have founded a sanctuary on Mont Tombe in 708, following three successive apparitions of the Archangel Michael. Overlooking the vast bay, the Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey is the highlight of the visit. To reach it, you’ll wander through a maze of stairways and medieval alleys, perfect for a leisurely stroll. The village, protected by ramparts built between the 12th and 14th centuries, is home to charming half-timbered houses. Mont-Saint-Michel and its bay have been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979.
