• Disappointing Experience – More Driver Than Guide

  Unfortunately, our tour of Hakone and Mt. Fuji fell far short of expectations. While we were excited to learn about the area’s history, culture, and landmarks, our guide acted more like a driver than an actual guide. Beyond pointing out basic locations, he offered very little insight or background information about the places we visited. The tour description listed several locations we were excited to see, but we were only taken to a few—and the guide didn’t even suggest visiting the others. We relied on their expertise to plan the best itinerary for us, but instead, we missed out on key spots we had hoped to experience. In fact we never saw Hakone which is listed in the title of the tour. Additionally, although the tour was advertised as 8–9 hours, the guide attempted to cut it short after lunch. We had to specifically ask to visit another location that was mentioned in the tour description, and even then, it felt like an inconvenience for him. He was clearly annoyed with our request and reluctantly accommodated us by dropping us off while he waited elsewhere with the van. Much of the focus seemed to be on avoiding traffic rather than enriching our day. Our guide reached out via WhatsApp the night before our scheduled excursion to ask if we would be willing to depart an hour early to avoid traffic. We happily accommodated this request agreeing that sitting in traffic was a waste of valuable tour time. We felt rushed at several stops and had little opportunity to explore or ask questions. It felt more like a transportation service than a guided tour, which was really disappointing given the price and our hopes for a deeper connection to the region. To make matters worse, on the drive back—while we were effectively trapped in the car—the guide repeatedly pressured us to leave a five-star review. It felt uncomfortable and unprofessional, especially considering the lackluster experience we’d had. The only good part of the day was the perfect weather which afforded us stellar views of Mt Fuji from several locations. Obviously the tour company and guide cannot control the weather so this was not taken into consideration when writing our review. We wanted this to be clearly stated as the guide told us previous reviewers gave negative ratings based on the weather and inability to view Mt Fuji. This was not the case for us; our review is based solely on the experience with tour with weather not being a factor. I wouldn’t recommend this tour if you’re looking for meaningful commentary, thoughtful planning, or professional conduct. You might be better off arranging transportation independently and researching the sites in advance which in hindsight is what we should have done.

  Hati was a great driver, took great pictures of me at the beautiful locations which were Kawaguchi Lake, Oshi Park, and Fujijinji Shrine. Nice clean car and spoke good English. Thank you making my trip rememberable.

  Rocky, our guide is very kind and friendly. Even though the day was cloudy and we did not get to see Mt Fuji clearly, the lunch and the visit to the open air museum was totally worth it.

  Weather was SNOW & not an expected snowfall this late. We had over 10inches. It was beautiful, but unable to see Mt Fuji or go to the pagoda. Muhammad was excellent driver & guide.
